The rooms

Three rooms, twelve steps apart, and nothing up a flight of stairs. Play in Vale, walk into Mare to hear it back, and leave with files you can send out that night. Aether sits between them for the class, for choreography and for everyone who needs a couch. The whole place fits ten to fifteen people, which is deliberate — it stays a room full of people who know each other by the end of the day.

Live room

Vale

Vale is where things get made. It keeps the brick and steel trusses of the old brew house, so there is real height and real air above a kit, and it is set up so a band can walk in, plug in and be playing inside twenty minutes. Rehearse in it, track in it, or just take over the floor for the afternoon and see what happens.

Control & mix room

Mare

Mare is the quiet end of the building. It was retuned over eleven months until both listening positions matched, which in plain terms means what you hear here is what comes out of a phone, a car and a laptop. Mixing, mastering and writing all happen in it, and there is a sofa far enough back that everyone else can sit in without crowding the desk.

Learning & movement room

Aether

Aether is the room that is never doing only one thing. On a class afternoon it is six people and six screens learning to make a track from nothing. On a shoot week the screens go away, the mirror wall comes out from behind its curtain and it is a dance floor for blocking album choreography. The rest of the time it is simply open — a sprung floor, a couch and a kettle, for anyone with a session on in Vale or Mare who needs to get out of the room for twenty minutes, and for the people who came down to hang about and ended up writing something.
